Follow Me, Mittens

Can anyone tell me where my daughter left this book?  It’s a library book and I’m tired of paying for library books.  :(

Nintendo DS Delimma

October 24, 2008

Months ago, Alex broke Cassie’s Nintendo DS Lite.  Ever since then, I told Alex that she had to share her Nintendo with Cassie until I could do something about the problem.  I was able to find a replace case online that would allow me to swap the guts out of the broken DS (actually only the case was broken, but that made it unusable) into the new case.

I stayed up late last night doing this.  After following the instructions to the best of my ability, I was able to get everything into the new case.  It appeared to work, until I found that the touch screen was not working.  After opening it back up and going back through the instructions, I realized that I had not followed one of the instructions properly and I had broken the touch screen.

Since this has been an open issue for a while and both girls worked for their Nintendos’, I feel I still need to do something about this because Cassie does not have her own Nintendo DS.  Having them share the one working DS is not fair to Cassie.  Giving Alex’s working DS to Cassie (without any other concessions) is not quite fair to Alex.  After speaking to my mom about this, she came up with…

Give Cassie control of Alex’s Nintendo.  Give Alex a chance to get it back by doing the same thing she did to get it in the first place (read 100 books in a month).  Once she reads the books, her reward is to get her DS back and I give Cassie a new one for Alex’s effort.  While the DS is in Cassie’s control, Alex can use it at Cassie’s discretion.  If Alex decides not to work to get it back, Cassie gets Alex’s DS to do with as she pleases.  This would be a one-time thing.  If a DS gets broken in the future, it does not get replaced with Dad’s money.

Anyone have any thoughts about this?

Funny story my mom told me about Alex

June 5, 2008

The three of us were upstairs in my bedroom and then Alex went downstairs with Pop Pop. When she came back I asked her if she had given Pop Pop my kisses. She said yes, so I said to her that I was going to wipe off Pop Pop kisses. I wiped both sides of her face and she then began to tune up as if she was going to cry. I said, what’s wrong. She said, “You wiped off Daddy’s kisses too.” I asked her if you had locked your kisses in and she said no. I was too tickled so I opened my hand and said, “Well, let me put them back on. Which side of your face did he kiss you?’ She told me and I rubbed my hand over that side of her face and her tears disappeared.

You Can Make A Difference

May 14, 2008

Someone at work sent me an email about this little girl that has a brain tumor. Here is an excerpt from the web site her family has set up:

On January 7, 2008, our lives were changed forever when our 10 year old daughter Emily was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in her left thalamus. Emily’s brain tumor, a pediatric low grade astrocytoma (PLGA) is the most common type of childhood brain tumor and yet, has historically received little, if any, dedicated funding or research. Consequently, there are few treatment options available, and those that are available are invasive, toxic and mostly ineffective.

Emily is determined to change all this and she has set her sights on raising $1 million to help fund PLGA dedicated research by December 31st, 2008. We, her family, have partnered with The Pediatric Low Grade Astrocytoma Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) charity (founded in August 2007) to help raise money for dedicated PLGA research with a goal of developing kinder, gentler and more effective treatments, AND a cure, for the thousands of PLGA children around the world.

I do believe this to be true. Please visit Emily’s website, www.colorforacure.com. You can buy a pixel of color for just one dollar. Each dollar – every cent – goes to PLGA research, and each pixel is added to a picture which is gradually completed as the goal of a million dollars is approached. You can make a difference in a child’s life, and make sure you tell a friend!

Very Unhappy Child

May 13, 2008

The kids and I went to Six Flags yesterday for Hazelwood Day; a tradition where the citizens of the City of Hazelwood, MO and the attendees of the Hazelwood School DIstrict take off work and school and go to Six Flags. The park is rented out just for Hazelwood Day.

My kids wanted to ride Tidal Wave; a water ride where you are guaranteed to get wet. Well…they did, and Alex was not happy.

Both girls got wet

Working Together…

The girls are reading the same book...

The girls put a smile on my face tonight. We went to the library and they happened to check out the same book. I went to get gas and when I got back in the car, Alex was reading out loud. After a bit, Cassie started reading out loud and Alex stopped. It turns out, they were each reading a page of the same book.

Alex’s Reading Challenge

March 30, 2008

Alex is up to 73 books in her reading challenge. She has slowed down over the course of the month. She now has 1 day to read 27 books. I hope she makes it because she has tried several other times and didn’t make it. i told her this was the last time I was going to do that…in order to be fair to Cassie. She really wants that Nintendo DS.
